Movin’ Together – Swingin’ Into Health

by Sara Vogt - August 14, 2024

While growing up in the beautiful town of Wellsboro, PA, our neighbors had a porch swing. The mom of the home would often go outside on her front porch, and I saw her enjoying her swing. Her daughter Barbie and I would also share childhood adventures while swinging. It is a wonderful memory.

My husband John told me he wanted a front porch three years ago. We live in a saltbox home that only sometimes has front porches. I enjoy being outside, so after I let go of the saltbox look, I was happy to entertain the thought. We talked to Alden Weiner about designing and building a front porch. He has done a fantastic job, and I enjoy going outside and sitting on our front porch. Last week, when he installed our front porch swing, my life on the porch became even more enjoyable!

Swings are more than just furniture. They provide a social hub, creating a cozy spot for bonding with family and friends and fostering a sense of togetherness and community. John and I now go out and spend about a half hour talking about our family and our dreams for the future. It is very relaxing to spend time swinging.

On this Movin” Together, I’ll encourage everyone to enjoy our swings or consider getting one!

Swinging on a porch swing is not just about burning calories; it’s about having fun and enjoying a unique way to stay active. In just half an hour, you can burn up to 100 calories, all while relishing the gentle, rhythmic motion that can help reduce stress and anxiety, promoting relaxation and a sense of calm. Porch swings offer a range of health benefits, both mental and physical.

In this article, I am going to mention four benefits of swinging.

One: This motion stimulates the vestibular system, improving balance and coordination. The vestibular system detects the position and movement of our head in space, allowing for the coordination of eye movements, posture, and equilibrium.

Two: Swinging also improves circulation and reduces the appearance of varicose veins. Outside in the air, paired with the movement required by the legs, makes using a porch swing beneficial for circulation. The activity boosts circulation and keeps the blood flowing throughout the body. The relaxation factor can even lower heart rate, making a porch swing ideal for heart health.

Three: Spending time outdoors on a porch swing provides an opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and our God-created world – enhancing mood and overall well-being. Additionally, the seating position of a porch swing can encourage good posture and alleviate back pain, contributing to physical comfort and health.

Four: Having an outdoor space to discuss the many details of our lives with our children and spouses is excellent. Thanks to my husband John, who wanted this porch, and Alden Weiner, who put up the swing!

Also, thanks to our Home Page family members for joining in on the fun of swinging – Ethan, Jonathan, Erica, Ella, Piper, Piper’s grandmother Lori, Andrew, and Wyatt.

Next time on Movin’ Together to sleep or not to sleep!
