Trojans Dominate Sayre, 84-12

by Wyatt Wood - August 26, 2024

Welcome back Troy football fans! The 2024 season began last Friday, August 23 as the Troy Trojans hosted the Sayre Redskins.

In the first quarter the Redskins received the opening kickoff and broke through the Trojans, gaining an early 6.

Troy returned in kind, forcing their way up the field – then Brenden Gilliland with a 22 yard run started the Trojans off, 7-6.

Sayre, starting on their own 23 rolled out and sent a bomb down the field, putting up another 6. The Trojans foiled the 2 point conversion attempt, Redskins up, 12-7.

The Trojans advanced, then on 3rd and 6 inside the 10 – Gilliland again found his way across the goal line. The extra point was good, taking the lead for Troy with 8 minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Troy’s defense held strong, giving Mason Smith the opportunity for a pick 6, making the score 21-12 in favor of Troy.

Then on an outside screen Joseph Frye followed his blockers to the house to put the Trojans up, 28-12.

The Trojans started to break away from their competition as Evan Woodward sent a big ball over the shoulder of Lincoln Chimics. To end the first quarter, Chimics found a hole in the Redskins secondary and took it all the way – ending the first quarter, 42-12.

The Trojans went on to put up 20 more points in the half and kept the pressure up. By the end of the third the score was 70-12, and then Troy threw up another 14 in the 4th, making the final score a commanding 84-12.
